Hi Jonathon,

I just watched Chade-Meng's TED talk that you got to attend. Years late, but still relevant.

I agree with you that Chade speaks from a fortunate stance. So does Google.

Buddhists would say that in wealth or poverty compassion and self-enlightenment can help you. These traits are not forbidden to the poor. I wonder whether they are as accessible. Is it easier for a person whose basic needs are met to be compassionate or to learn what Chade is teaching in general? I think it is.

I also wrote on my blog (http://threekeywords.com/thinkoutloud/) about concerns I have with his thinking.

Still, efforts to improve the poor's material condition do not exclude efforts to improve their (or their rich counterparts') spiritual condition. The danger is when one replaces the other. We should be grateful to have the luxury to work on the inner landscape rather than cynical and self-critical that we have made it while others haven't yet.
